Community Spotlight
Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) places a strong value in our community relationships, and one of those relationships is with Trellis, a non-profit organization that works to engage our community and provide valuable support to our schools.

Trellis has supported NMUSD schools for nearly five years with a strong focus in the area of literacy. With the goal of having every third-grader read at grade level, Trellis has provided 150 Elementary Classroom Literacy Volunteers to help support literacy needs in 18 Costa Mesa schools. Much of the support is centered on providing guided reading assistance in third grade, support for enhancing student’s key phonics skills in second grade, and math assistance, which has a strong focus on content and literacy skills. The teacher-driven direction for Trellis support is tailored to each student’s specific need.

Trellis also provides Crates of Care, which include school supplies to teachers twice a year; teen mentorship program, which connects students with mentors during school lunch breaks; and support for homeless families in need of shelter, laundry service, food, and other needs.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes also are provided by Trellis for parents on Wednesday nights. Volunteers provide homework assistance for students while parents are in ESL classes.
